The Principle

The Principle: The more precisely the position is determined, the less precisely the momentum is known in this instant and vice versa.  -Heisenberg, 1927

How does this relate to a musical setting? Music is obviously an art form, but in many ways it’s also a science. It's very measurable, but with that comes an element of uncertainty due to the human factor. For instance, when we play music, it can easily be dissected into notes, time signatures, etc. all with different parameters which would determine a precise musical "position". But there is a human element to it that makes it unpredictable and less precise.

We sometimes are able to tap into a musical “magic place” that is totally driven by a human feeling where everything isn’t necessarily perfect, but sonically sounds and feels as good as it possibly can. It’s as though we know exactly where our position is in the musical universe, but then its gone…..and for us, this is not measurable. Herein lies the uncertainty in music, but in this case it’s a good thing. It's a feeling.

So, musically, uncertainty can be a positive. Our goal is to find this musical magic place as often as possible via the Uncertainty Principle. We hope our audience does too. Peace.
